Free! Ramblings and Summer 2013 anime favorites

A few weeks ago, I was searching for some shoujo anime to watch but I couldn’t seem to find one to fit the mood that I was looking for. At that time, I was looking for something along the lines of Lovely Complex or Kare Kano but to no avail; so, I ended up browsing through the next season of upcoming anime.

A few that stood out to me were definitely the new seasons of the previously aired anime such as High School DxD ( I know it’s a bit ecchi but I somehow usually end up liking comedy anime about the demon world), The World that God only Knows (oh I’m so excited for this) and Hakkenden (whose first season I actually forgot to finish watching before I saw the post). Another that I’m quite excited about is Kimi no Iru Machi whose manga is quite interesting albeit all the drama. You see, I’m not a big fan of too much drama, especially if it’s on the brink of becoming something like a Korean drama or manhwa; but its manga was I think pretty balanced with its amount of drama, randomness and reality.

Anyways, here I was looking for some shoujo but here it only offers me Free and Brothers Conflict. Brothers Conflict sounds quite promising, with its plot in a close borderline of Ouran; but there’s a 80% chance it will end up becoming something third rate, cheesy or worse, something like Zodiac. Free on the other hand, is a sports anime. After reading the plot summary, it has me believing that it seems to be only counted as shoujo for having bishounen characters and that it skill probably leave me with a feel similar to that of Price of Tennis; thus, I already crossed it out from my to-watch list.

Just a few minutes ago, I saw a post by Tzia_n about watching Free, something about it having “off-the-chart inuendos” and “random stripping” but doing it “for the greater good” (lol) so I got curious. I watched the first episode and I must say, the lead character Haru-chan is definitely my type of bishie. Nice hair, strong eyes, perfect built and omg when he blushed! He’s perfect! Definitely one of the best looking bishies since the black butler! It’s been ages since my heart made a little pit-a-pat with just a bishounen close-up.

Anyhow, the first episode did not have the lot of inuendos as I had expected. Maybe there’s a lot of skinship fire fan service and maybe you can make a story out of it due to Rin and Haru’s rivalry; but really, in my book, shounen-ai level of this anime based on the first episode is pretty close to zero. However, I want to note that I have not lost hope in this series and will be looking for such scenes in the later episodes.

On the other hand, I believe my friends were right with the “random stripping”. Haru-chan is definitely a weirdo with a little bit of a swimsuit fetish. Always wearing a swimsuit everywhere is definitely quite something, and if I can be forgiven for my little fangirling, OMG IT’S SO CUTE AND ADORABLE AND SO RANDOM. I admit at first that the detail in the torso made me quite uneasy but one I got used got used to it, maybe at about the third time, it was fine. … lol

Lastly, I want to say that WHAT THE HECK WAS WITH THAT ENDING THEME! I mean, the song was ok but what’s with the desert and the pouring if water on Rin and that last blushing moment with Haru. I mean, I think it’s too out there! I had to raise my brow! That said, Free, based on the first episode is at a 8.5 out of 10 based on overall impact, however if I just base it on Haru’s face and personality and Rin’s deep voice, I give it a 20/10 lol.

Karneval – through a fujoshi’s eyes

I was browsing about in when I found this anime with very appealing art and lots of bishounen so I thought, what the heck, let’s watch it!

Nai searches for someone important to him (Karoku), with only an abandoned bracelet as a clue. Gareki steals and pick-pockets to get by from day to day. The two meet in a strange mansion where they are set-up, and soon become wanted criminals by military security operatives. When Nai and Gareki find themselves desperate in a hopeless predicament, they encounter none other than the country’s most powerful defense organization-“Circus”!! –

The first two episodes were quite puzzling as I couldn’t know where everything was going. Let’s just say that I was curious if Nai has any special fighting powers that can be used, or will he remain asĀ  just this damsel in distress type that will completely rely on Gareki and Circus. Also, what’s with Gareki and the bracelet? Curious indeed. Anyways, by the first half of the third episode you’ll probably get the gist of the whole story and where it’s heading. Furthermore, this particular episode has lots of shounen ai hints between the two main characters, and maybe, if you push it, even a love triangle angle.

In my assessment, Gareki seems to be that dark character that grew up in the slums while Nai is the innocent type, a pet-like epitome of light. Now, Nai seems to be brightening Gareki’s life and their exchange of words just sends tingles down my fujoshi spine. Here are some lines from the third episode.

Nai: Gareki, I don’t need you.
Gareki: Tell me, what do you mean by that?
Nai: Gareki is.. sca..
Gareki: I’m scary? You’re saying this after all we’ve been through?

Gareki: Are you saying that you’re giving me what I want so now I can disappear?

This conversation in particular seems like a little break-up scene, it was like a build up for the next one; and that last line was actually what gave me the sense of their lovey dovey affair. You can totally change the setting and reuse these lines in a yaoi fan fiction!

Gareki: I’ll look like a fool if I get angry, In fact, You’ve always asked for my help so what’s this about me being scary?
Nai: You’re not scary!
(Nai explains what Karoku told him to do)
Gareki: I’ll ask again, what’s you’re relationship with Karoku?
(Gareki asks Nai about his and Karoku’s relationship in more detail)
Gareki thoughts: On top of that, he’s picking a fight with me!
Gareki: I’m sorry, it seems I misunderstood you. I don’t really dislike you.
(insert Nai’s cute pet version here)
Gareki seems to almost blush

Jealousy? Love Triangle? and a Confession at the end? Ok, maybe I’m pushing it, but I totally felt it when I first watched it! Another easily fanficable conversation!

For more, watch this series! It’s a pretty good shoujo action-adventure kind of thing. You can stream it here! Now I’ll go proceed with episode 4!

What matters is not what you cannot do but what you can do~
